The Courthouse Museum in Sioux Falls

This wonderful little museum is housed in the building that once served as the courthouse for the city (and probably the county too). It was truly a beautiful building, on both the inside and the outside. I got a few shots of the outside of the building.

Once inside, there was all kinds of neat things. They had a beautiful exhibit of textiles including quilting, weaving, embroidery. In short, all things that I love! There was a giant stuffed buffalo, with which we had to get our picture taken, of course!

In the buffalo picture, there is a mural painted on the wall behind us. There were a number of these murals all through the first two floors of the museum, and I took a few pictures of them as well.

I love the expression on the face of the fish in the painting on the left! It was, unfortunately, rather difficult to get any really good pictures of these murals due to their size and placement and the lighting in the museum. There were a lot of them though, and they were all fabulous. Some of them had fallen into disrepair due to old age, and a few were water damaged. They were in the process of restoring some of them, and were trying to raise money for the remainder of the restoration. Needless to say, I dropped some money in the collection box.

Among the interesting artifacts in the museum was an actual camera from the first movie house in Sioux Falls. It was really cool! It had been in service for many many years, and was rescued when the theater was torn down, and restored for display. Of course, I took a picture of it as well.

The old courtroom was preserved in it's original state, but I couldn't get any pictures of that. In a "great hall" type room in the upstairs, there was beautiful stained glass and gorgeous stenciling on the walls and ceilings. Only one of those pictures came out well enough to show y'all here, but it was one of my favorites. This was on the ceiling, around the anchor for one of the ornate chandeliers.

After we saw everything in the museum, and signed their guestbook, we made an extended stop in their giftshop, where we bought all kinds of great things for ourselves, and gifts too! Everyone there was incredibly nice, and we were both very glad that we stopped to check it out. But, that was enough dallying for us, and it was back on the road for us. For real, this time!
